Background
Experts in their field, this luxury yacht company have been building deluxe, handcrafted boats for their clients for over two decades. With quality and customer service at the heart of the business, the company pride themselves on building some of the finest bespoke boats on the market.
The Challenge
In 2017, Redwood Innovations were approached by the client, who had becoming increasingly aware of issues with abrasives and their high gloss finishes within their boat interiors. One of the main problems was the unwanted swirls created whilst using abrasive discs on their gloss finishes.
Keen to rectify the issue as soon as possible, the company got in touch with Redwood Innovations. After an initial consultation over the phone with one of our Sia technical advisors, a meeting was arranged at their Bournemouth HQ with our director, Richard Albon from Redwood Innovations and Andy Knight from Sia Abrasives.
The solution
After a thorough inspection of the company’s workshop practices, Redwood Innovations were able to advise the company on how to simplify their abrasive methods, removing several steps in the process, as well as changing the types of abrasive discs they were using
To demonstrate, we ordered samples of the products we recommended – Sia 1948 Fibotec Sanding Discs, Sia 1919 wide belts and specialist wide belts for the finishing shop using the Sia 1730 & Sia 1719 specialist papers and allowed the client to see the results for themselves. All four papers were selected for their specific characteristics, giving the best result in their own particular class.
The outcome
Since simplifying the organisation’s abrasives process and changing the types of sanding discs used, the swirling issues on their boat interiors have disappeared and the company have managed to reduce the time they spend on this stage by almost 50% – improving both customer satisfaction and the company’s bottom line.
