Which Adhesive Is Best for Veneering?
Wood veneers have been a staple in furniture making and millwork for over 200 years, utilized to create high-quality furniture and flooring. A veneer is a paper-thin slice of wood that is applied to a core of either MDF or another substrate to ensure a strong base. The initial use of veneers stemmed from the instability of solid wood, which expands and contracts with temperature changes. While certain types of furniture, like dining tables, can be made from solid timbers, cabinetry such as kitchen cupboards and drawer units are best crafted with veneered substrates to ensure minimal structural movement.

PVA (Polyvinyl Acetate)

However, as a water-based adhesive, it can cause the veneer to warp unless the thickness of the veneer is strong enough to resist until the adhesive sets. This issue can be mitigated with a careful clamping or pressing process. Once cured, PVA creates a flexible glue line joint, making it suitable for applications where some movement is acceptable.
UF Resin (Urea-Formaldehyde)
UF resin is a two-part liquid resin mix known for its high bond strength and rigid glue line. This adhesive offers superior strength and chemical resistance, preventing creep over time, unlike PVA. As a thermosetting, non-reversible adhesive, UF resin provides excellent heat resistance. Simply put, the UF resin glue line will not soften at any temperature, making it ideal for applications requiring a durable, long-lasting bond.
